For what it’s worth, the study below estimates the number of graphic designers practicing and their economic impact. In 1974 the AIGA could identify approximately 450 4-year educational programs in graphic design in the US - the GDEA mailing list in 1986 had comparable numbers. In 1988, the GDEA also identified nearly 1300 community colleges that taught graphic design at some level, most describing design rather than technical careers as outcomes of study.
